Gartner's report entitled "Green IT: The New Industry Shock Wave" states that "Despite this skepticism, we do not believe that green IT will be a passing fashion. Instead, we believe it represents the start of a significant and material change." According to Gartner "The fundamental difference between what we see today and previous fads and discontinuities is the combination of the political rhetoric and the science behind climate change." As a result, they state that "Unless the science behind climate change develops a more-optimistic view of the problem, or progress in technology development and adoption, along with behavioral changes, unfolds more quickly than expected, enterprises should anticipate that they will be motivated and forced to make significant improvements to energy and material efficiency in their business operations, supply chains, and products and services."
SunGard is an aggressive adopter of green technology, researching and adopting best of breed components for our infrastructure and systems. Examples include advanced uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that utilize compressed air rather than batteries and new server technology that requires lower power consumption and heat generation. Additionally, SunGard is piloting virtualization technologies, both internally and to service our customers, to help consolidate server usage and improve operational efficiency.
Our business model provides shared, high-intensity IT resources to businesses so these organizations do not have to utilize redundant servers, electrical power and other resources to create a backup environment. We offer services that can adapt well to a company's green IT initiative. Examples of these are:
SunGard's green initiatives also include (i) use of energy-efficient lighting, (ii) use of highly efficient computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units, and (iii) operating in economizer mode for air handling equipment. Additionally, SunGard looks to work with green power providers in the areas where our facilities are located. SunGard is a contributing member of The Green Grid organization and a SunGard representative serves as a member of the Technical Committee.
