Defining the Role of the Business Continuity Manager – More than IT

Business continuity is more than an IT discipline. Often times though the role of the business continuity manager within a business is defined in the IT context. Considering that business interruptions come in many varieties, and that business recovery involves more than technology restoration, positioning the role of the business continuity manager in this context can limit the scope of a business' information availability program. The business continuity manager instead should be able to view the business from a holistic point of view in order to incorporate risk mitigation strategies and emergency preparedness. This will help businesses create a more robust and proactive Information Availability program, one focused on mitigation and preparedness as well as resumption.

In their report entitled “Gartner for IT Leaders Overview: The Business Continuity Manager,” Gartner Research states, “the focus of the business continuity manager role is expanding beyond IT disaster recovery to include risk management and mitigation, as well as restoring mission-cirtical business processes, personnel, facilities and technologies.” This report clearly defines the role of the business continuity manager and identifies where it should be positioned in the organization. It recommends integrating IT disaster recovery and business recovery expertise into one organization. This approach centralizes risk mitigation programs and also brings together the disciplines needed for business availability.
