THE RISE OF EXTREMELY HIGH-SPEED BUSINESS MODELS

In 1996, Kabira's founders observed the rapidly growing acceptance and mounting dependence on mass connectivity by the markets at large. They surmised that there would be a corollary widespread need for extremely high-speed business models, and that businesses unable to implement these models would encounter substantial obstacles to success. Since that time, conjecture has become reality with the exponential rise in the need for high-speed business models such as those in the financial and communications industries. In fact, Gartner Research acknowledges this phenomenon, as described in detail in the Massimo Pezzini article included in this research briefing, and designates it as "Extreme Transaction Processing" (XTP), and solutions that address it, "Extreme Transaction Processing Platforms" (XTPP).

The rise in XTP and the need for XTPPs is driven by factors such as:
  • Increasing Credit Card Use
  • The Rise of Debit and Pre-paid Cards
  • On-line Banking
  • Micro-payments
  • Algorithmic Financial Exchanges
  • Currency Movements
  • Trillions of Transactions per Day
  • 3G Mobile Communications
  • Pre-paid Subscribers
  • 3rd Party Charging for Content
  • Phone-based Instant Payment
  • Live Internet Broadcasting
  • WiFi, WiMAX
  • Billions of Mobile Devices
These impacts have resulted in the need to quickly, efficiently and reliably manage business transactions in flight – with many applications moving to require sub-second real-time performance. This, coupled with mounting competitive pressures has forced businesses today to seek relief along three core dimensions:
  • The need for Higher Performance
  • The need to Better Manage Costs and Other Resources
  • The need for Business Flexibility
Kabira Technologies was established to build infrastructure software that would enable high-speed business models and support mission critical business processes, in a manner that was truly reliable, optimally flexible, highly available and could scale cost-efficiently.
